China’s coastline, spanning locations such as Dapeng New Area in Shenzhen, Xiamen’s coastal thoroughfare, Qingdao’s shoreline and Sanya in Hainan, is lined with beachfront villas. For both buyers and families renting these properties for holidays, these homes embody a longing to connect with nature.
Yet many coastal residences fall into one of two renovation traps. Some blindly adopt the cliché Mediterranean ocean theme, covered in seashell decor and bold high-contrast blue-and-white stripes. Others end up looking identical to generic modern show homes. Contemporary coastal and nautical design, by contrast, leverages natural light, island-sourced timber textures and restrained nautical motifs to weave the ocean’s free spirit and understated luxury into residential spaces.

I. Defining Features of Coastal and Nautical Interior Design
Coastal and nautical aesthetics capture the fluidity of the sea, raw natural textures and the historical legacy of maritime culture. Its signature elements include:
- Low-saturation natural palette The sea and sky offer gradients of muted tones rather than vivid hues. Modern coastal design draws inspiration from beach textures.
- Sand and rock tones: oat, linen white, warm greige and weathered timber grey.
- Deep ocean accents: desaturated forest green, hazy blue and navy blue, used sparingly as focal touches.
- Breathable, raw materials Driftwood and weathered timber feature on dining tables, coffee tables and wall accents. Marked by natural cracks and faded from seawater exposure, these one-of-a-kind timbers carry inherent maritime character. Expansive jute rugs, rattan seat panels and sheer linen drapes create a beautifully billowing effect when coastal breezes flow through.
- Restrained, abstracted nautical accents Brass and stainless steel (formidable against coastal salt spray), marine rope and canvas serve as subtle decorative details. Avoid dense narrow stripes; opt instead for wide-width, low-contrast textiles and rugs.
- Transparent light dynamics Light is the soul of coastal homes. Floor-to-ceiling windows, full-height sliding glass doors and sheer light-filtering linen curtains invite sunlight and the sound of waves indoors. Natural ambient sounds from the sea also create a deeply restful acoustic environment.
II. Remodeling Chinese Beachfront Villas in a Coastal & Nautical Style
Beachfront villas in China come with high ongoing maintenance costs. This stems from climatic pressures including high humidity, heavy rainfall and corrosive salt spray, alongside poor design and material choices during construction.
- Moisture and mildew resistance Hainan and Guangdong experience extreme humidity, where conventional latex paint readily grows mould. Microcement and shell lime decorative coatings are recommended, delivering a soft texture reminiscent of fine sand. Large-format matte anti-slip floor tiles work well for flooring.
Unnecessary solid partition walls can be removed to open up living rooms, dining zones and outdoor patios. Large aluminium thermal-break windows create an immersive holiday flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
A three-storey standalone holiday villa in Qingshui Bay, Lingshui, Hainan, faces directly onto the South China Sea and serves as its owner’s regular retreat. The original layout contained many solid walls, and latex-painted walls suffered widespread mildew every rainy season. The designer’s solution: shell lime decorative coatings across all common areas, paired with selective microcement finishes for a fine sandy texture. Matte anti-slip antique tiles run throughout the floors, offering water and salt resistance. The solid wall separating the living room and patio was demolished and replaced with oversized aluminium thermal-break sliding systems, fully connecting the living, dining and patio spaces and greatly boosting cross-ventilation.
- Material selection Teak outdoor furniture suits villa patios and courtyards, paired with UV-resistant, waterproof Sunbrella canvas cushions. Avoid full timber fit-outs indoors. Instead, introduce mirrors shaped like vintage portholes, finely polished brass light fixtures and sofas upholstered in a blend of leather and heavy linen.
Many homeowners choose Burmese teak outdoor tables and chairs with Sunbrella waterproof, UV-stable canvas cushions. To mitigate mould risks, solid hardwood is not used throughout the interior. Sofas combine leather and heavy linen upholstery, while all metal fittings are specified as 316 stainless steel or corrosion-treated brass.
- Lighting and soft furnishings Ornate crystal chandeliers should be omitted. Use recessed anti-glare spotlights and track lighting, complemented by rattan pendant lamps and exterior wall sconces. At dusk, warm yellow light diffuses across walls, casting soft romantic glow reminiscent of a cruise ship deck. Large tropical plants are essential, such as traveller’s palms, bird of paradise and dracaena. Oversized abstract fine-art photographs of ocean waves can also be introduced to inject vitality into the space.
